A new THOR series will debut in October with a pretty major change for the series as Jason Aaron (THOR: GOD OF THUNDER, ORIGINAL SIN) and Russell Dauterman (CYCLOPS) give fans an all-new female Thor for the first time ever. The news was first announced, for whatever reason, on The View, where inexplicably Jenny McCarthy explained that the new Thor was at some points saved by her predecessor but has remade herself and now is the true Thor. More details have surfaced with writer Aaron quick to point out that "This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it's unlike any Thor we've ever seen before."
This strikes me as a really compelling move. As Marvel has clearly gone above and beyond in answering criticism about their lack of female-driven books by delivering a slew of really fantastic ones over the course of the past couple years, a female Thor no longer feels simply like an attention grabber. It is a huge shift, and not just because now Thor is a woman (while the original Thor remains in the universe, as seen below with an axe and a prosthetic arm). This rather changes Asgard in a lot of ways that I'm sure will be seen as the series launches. Just like with the recent announcement that there will soon be a new Captain America (did we talk about that? I feel like we didn't because I think I was at work when I found out. Well, guys, there's gonna be a new Cap) with Steve depowered and running things from the sidelines, the once-Thor and the new-Thor in the universe at the same time makes for a compelling shift. We'll see how it all pans out.
